This is a unit I created in one of my reading classes at Eastern University. The unit is on the book The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White. The overall objective of this unit is to get students involved in the story and to get them familiar with response journals. The unit will incorporate different reading and writing activities as well as ongoing response journals, followed by a final project.

This is lesson number eight of the unit. During this lesson students are continuing to read the story and work on their journals. They are also being introduced to cinquains and will practice writing their own poems about different characters in the book.

Lesson #8

Objectives:
- Students will learn and practice cinquians
- Students will continue their journals
- Students will continue work on their character organizers and map papers

Standards:
- 1.1.3. D, E, F
- 1.3.3. A, B,D

Materials:
- The Trumpet of the Swan
- Plot worksheet
- Character organizer
- Map worksheet
- Journal
- Pencil/crayons
- Cinquain worksheet
- String
- Construction paper
- Three hole punch

Gaining Attention:

Begin the lesson by discussing the student's thoughts on the previous chapters. Talk about what they wrote in their journals, and also make note of any vocabulary words they have added to their lists. This would be a good point also to walk through the plot worksheet again, so the students review and are aware of what is happening in the story so far. After that tell the students that they will be working on some poetry today, particularly cinquains.

Presenting the Material:
Begin by reading chapters 17 and 18 as a class. After reading, discuss the chapters with the class, focusing on Louis reunited with Serena and how they finally got their freedom, After the discussion, tell the students they are going to work on the poetry first, and then complete the other work for the two chapters. First explain to them what a cinquian is. Pass out the worksheet, which has the order of the poem on it. Talk to them about the poem, telling them they will write theirs about different characters in the books. Then go over the order with them

Line 1: One word that tells what the poem is about
Line 2: Two words that describe the subject
Line 3: Three words that describe something the subject does
Line 4: Four to six words describing the subject further
Line 5: One or two words that rename what the poem is about (synonym of line1)

After explaining the order to the students give them an example:

Ms. Breure
Loves school
Teaches children reading
Enjoys seeing children learn
Krista

If the teacher thinks the students may be struggling with the concept, have them help you write a poem on the board.

Checking for Understanding:

Tell the students that they will be creating a booklet of cinquain poems for this book. They will have to write 5 poems, each on different characters. The character organizers that they have been doing throughout the story will help them write the poems. Have the students write the drafts on their poems in their journals. After all the student's poems are done and have been checked by the teacher, they can copy them to construction paper. (This may be done on a separate day). The will them punch three holes into their paper and put thread through it to create a book. The students should also make a cover for their cinquain book.

When the students have the drafts of their poems done, they should work on their plot worksheet, filling in the next two blocks. The students also need to record on their maps that Sam went from Montana to Philadelphia Zoo. The students need to journal on chapters 17 and 18, paying attention to how Louis felt by the events that happened. What did Louis do for the people that he loved, did he sacrifice anything for them. Have the students predict what they think will happen in the last few chapters of the book.

Closure:
Have a few students share their cinquians with the class. Remind the class that they will have a vocabulary test in a few days, so they need to keep studying their words. The words on the test will be taken from the list of words that the students came up with. Close the lesson by reading chapter 19 to the class and have them think about what will happen in the story.

Assessment:
Assessment will be done through the cinquain books and also through the work done in the journal.

Enrichment:
If students have the time, they should write cinquians for additional characters.
